Tarapoto: On the shores of Laguna Azul (Blue Lake)
Relax at our El Sauce Resort on the shores of beautiful Laguna Azul, an oasis in the heart of the tree-covered mountains of the high forests of Tarapoto, situated just one hour from the town, across the Huallaga River. El Sauce Resort is the most luxurious hotel on the lakeshore, offering guests a choice of 10 rooms with terrace and hammocks, 12 independent cabins with a view of the garden, and just a few steps from the swimming pool 5 two-storey family bungalows with a view of the lake. In spite of its remote location, the hotel offers every modern comfort: cable television, Wi-Fi, mini-bar, hot water and ceiling fan. The main attractions of the hotel include the two hotels and the spa, with its Jacuzzi, sauna and massage service. It is also possible to take quad bike tours or enjoy a lake excursion aboard a jet ski. More economical hotels are also located on the lakeshore, including La Cabaña del Lago.
Rooms cost from US$106.00 per night, and bungalows US$ 205.00, including breakfast, a tour of the lake and horse riding, or another activity selected from those available.
Puerto Maldonado: At a rustic-chic lodge
For those looking for comfort, the most romantic option in the subtropical forests of the Madre de Dios region is Hacienda Concepción: a lodge belonging to the Inkaterra chain specializing in luxury ecotourism. It has 6 rooms in an enormous Amazonian style house and 19 independent cabins, open on the side facing the rainforest. All are made from natural materials and decorated with charming details. Each room is protected with mosquito nets and has a private bathroom with hot water. Guests are offered rainforest excursions, included as part of their package. The lodge is situated within a fabulous private reserve, and additional tailored activities are offered, such as “River Cocktails” while listening to the sounds of forest life and waiting for the sun to go down from a private boat.
Double rooms are available from US$370.00, including a 3-day / 4-night itinerary.
Iquitos: On a cruise of the Amazon River
This is one of those things that everyone should do at least once in their life: journey through the rainforest by sailing slowly along the Amazon River aboard an open cruise boat, from the city of Iquitos to the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. A number of companies offer this service, and most of these are luxurious and expensive. We have found a Peruvian company that is a little more affordable, with charming cruise boats made from a combination of steel and wood. The Arapaima has 14 cabins, all with windows that offer beautiful panoramic views. The newest vessel, the Queen Violeta, has 6 suites and 12 double cabins with private bathroom, hot water, air conditioning and lovely views. It can carry a total of 34 passengers. From the bar located on the upper bridge, guests can observe the vast expanse of the lowland Amazon rainforest: immense trees, palms, macaws and other multicolored birds, dolphins cavorting in the river… Everything onboard is designed to offer comfort! The shortest trip takes passengers to the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. It is also possible to explore the route to the triple frontier shared by Peru, Brazil and Colombia.
The cost of the Queen Violeta expedition ranges from US$869.00 to US$1430.00 for 3 days and 2 nights in a double cabin on the first deck.
Pucallpa: In a Business Hotel
In recent years Pucallpa has been transformed into the ideal destination for those seeking to switch off for a few days under the Amazonian sun. It offers a number of business hotels and special weekend offers. We recommend the Ucayali River Hotel, which offers packages for couples, or the recently opened Casa Andina. The Casa Andina chain enjoys a very good reputation throughout Peru. The company has opened a Select Category hotel in Pucallpa, equivalent to a high-end 3-star hotel. The rooms are spacious, with LCD television, mini-bar, air conditioning and ceiling fan, Wi-Fi and iPod speakers for your Smartphone. The hotel also offers guests a swimming pool, gym, massage and hairdressing service, coffee shop open all hours and a restaurant serving a combination of Peruvian food with a Tex-Mex touch. And for those guests who want to venture beyond the hotel, the most recommended excursion is of course Lake Yarinacocha, just a half hour drive away and home to abundant birdlife and fine natural scenery. Amazon World is the most reliable local travel agency.
Prices range from US$65.00 for a double room with a queen-size bed, or US$86.00 for a junior suite with a king-size bed.
