Peru Expands Trade Opportunities with Fresh Mandarin Exports to Vietnam

The Peruvian government continues to enhance the country’s commercial prospects by forging new trade pathways. Recently, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced a significant milestone: the establishment of phytosanitary protocols for exporting fresh mandarins to Vietnam, an essential Asian market. This breakthrough resulted from a technical meeting between phytosanitary authorities from Peru and Vietnam.

“It’s vital for SENASA, as MIDAGRI’s strategic arm, to persist in managing access to new markets. This effort boosts commercial opportunities for Peruvian producers and strengthens the growth of agroexports,” stated the Minister of MIDAGRI.

Expanding Agroexport Horizons

At the meeting, SENASA’s technical delegation also presented progress on gaining access to the Vietnamese market for blueberries. This process is currently at the pest risk analysis stage. Vietnamese representatives expressed optimism, affirming that after concluding requirements for mandarins, the focus will shift to blueberries. “This process will proceed more swiftly,” they assured.

The Peruvian delegation included Orlando Dolores, SENASA’s Director of Plant Health, and Patricia Ráez, Peru’s Ambassador to Vietnam. Their collaborative efforts mark a significant step forward in cementing Peru’s reputation as a global agroexport leader.

Phytosanitary Protocols in Action

Under the agreed terms, Vietnam’s phytosanitary authority will publish the requirements in its official journal. SENASA will subsequently release the list of production sites and packing facilities eligible to begin exporting mandarins to Vietnam.

During the 2023 harvest season, Peruvian citrus fruits reached over 40 international markets, with the United States leading at 41% of the total exports. Mandarins emerged as the most in-demand citrus fruit, with over 190,000 metric tons exported to key markets like the U.S., the Netherlands, and China.

Strengthening Peruvian Agroexports

This new agreement signifies more than just expanded market access—it highlights Peru’s commitment to elevating its agricultural sector. By aligning with Vietnam’s phytosanitary standards, Peruvian producers can ensure the quality and safety of their exports, reinforcing trust and competitiveness on a global scale.

Moreover, the focus on blueberries as the next export product demonstrates Peru’s strategic approach to diversifying its agroexport portfolio. With streamlined processes anticipated for blueberries, Peruvian exporters can look forward to further growth opportunities in Vietnam’s burgeoning market.

The successful establishment of phytosanitary protocols for mandarin exports marks a pivotal achievement for Peru. By enabling access to Vietnam, a critical market in Asia, Peru is opening doors for its producers and showcasing its capacity for high-quality agroexports.

As SENASA continues to negotiate access for other products like blueberries, Peru solidifies its position as a global agricultural powerhouse. With robust trade strategies and international collaboration, the nation is paving the way for a thriving future in agroexports.
